Dependent Child Turns 19

Your child's 19th birthday may not seem like a huge milestone, but there is one major change affecting your benefits under the Health Plan. Dependents who are age 19 through age 25 must provide proof of full-time student status (8 units) on a form supplied by the Trust Office to retain coverage as your dependent. This evidence must be supplied once per school term (semester or quarter).

Benefit Plan Checklist

Items regarding the Health Plans apply only to participants in the Southern California IBEW-NECA Health Plans. However, if you participate in another electrician health plan, it is likely that similar considerations will apply.

If your child is a full time student, you must submit a Full Time Student Verification Form (proof of 8 units) to the Plan on a rolling six-month basis. When your child ceases to be a full time student, you must notify the Administrative Office within 60 days. You will become liable for any health claims paid by the Trust for any services after your dependent ceases to be eligible.
If you do not supply evidence of student status or if your child is no longer a full-time student, the child may be eligible for Continuation Coverage for up to 36 months.
If your child becomes totally disabled prior to turning age 19, the child may be eligible to continue as a dependent under your coverage.
